The Parker Quartet Master Class Contest



To enter, mail a CD of your string quartet's performance to:

American Public Media

The CD must be clearly marked with all of the following information:
1) The words: "Parker Quartet Master Class Competition"
2) String quartet's name
3) Name, address, email, and phone number for the string quartet's contact person.
4) Name of musical works performed

The CD must be accompanied by a cover letter containing all of the following information:
1) The words: "Parker Quartet Master Class Competition"
2) String quartet's name
3) Name, address, email, and phone number of the string quartet's contact person.
4) Name, address, age, and instrument of each performer
5) Name of each musical work performed, including composer, title, and movement information

Entries must be received before April 1, 2010. CDs will not be returned. Performances must be a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 20 minutes in length. At least two contrasting examples from different stylistic periods must be performed, and each selection must be on its own separate track on the CD. The string quartet must own all rights to its performance on the CD. Entries with incomplete information will be disqualified.

Limit one entry per string quartet. However, individual performers may participate in multiple string quartets. Multiple entries by the same string quartet, if discovered, will be disqualified.

Any string quartet can enter the Contest, provided that all of the following conditions are met:
1) The string quartet is comprised of two violins, viola, and cello, and
2) All string quartet members are at least 14 years of age, and
3) All string quartet members are enrolled in high school or college (undergraduate), and
4) Since May 1, 2009, none of the string quartet members are or were employees of American Public Media Group or its related organizations, including Minnesota Public Radio, their immediate family or persons living in the same household, and
5) All string quartet members are United States residents.

Void where prohibited by law.

The winning string quartet will receive the following:

1) Roundtrip coach airfare to Minneapolis-St. Paul for four people
2) For each string quartet member, one or two nights hotel accommodations in St. Paul, as needed. Hotel selected by American Public Media
3) One Master Class with Parker Quartet, in American Public Media's state-of-the-art Maud Moon Weyerhauser Music Studio. Exact date of the Master Class will be determined by mutual agreement of Parker Quartet and the winning string quartet, and must be completed before June 30, 2010
4) One free recording (on CD) of Master Class

Total prize package retail value: approximately $3500.00

The winning string quartet is responsible for any and all other costs associated with using the prize, including but not limited to meals, and any travel or lodging expenses for other persons. Prize is nontransferable, is not good for cash, and cannot be exchanged for other merchandise. Winner will receive the prize notification via the delivery service selected by American Public Media. Delivery limited to addresses within the United States. Other delivery restrictions may apply.

Every eligible entry will be considered. At its sole discretion, American Public Media group will choose the winner and back up winners based on the following selection criteria: difficulty of the pieces performed, technical skill, musicianship, and overall quality.

A winner and five (5) back up winners will be selected by American Public Media based on the selection criteria above. Winner will be notified by telephone, certified mail or email by May 1, 2010.

If American Public Media is unable to reach the winner or the winner is unable to confirm acceptance of the prize within 24 hours, then the unawarded prize will go to the first back up and subsequent back-ups thereof until the prize is awarded. The rules detailing Contest eligibility and method of selecting winners are on file at American Public Media.

Each member of the string quartet acknowledges and agrees that no form of cheating will be tolerated. Any persons found cheating, as determined in the sole discretion of American Public Media will be immediately disqualified from the competition.

By participating in this Contest, participants agree to be bound by the Official Rules and that American Public Media Group and related organizations, their agents and employees have no liability whatsoever for any injuries, losses, or damages of any kind which result from use of the prize, or by participation in the contest. American Public Media Group or its related organizations may use winner's name and likeness for advertising, fundraising, promotional or publicity purposes without further compensation. Taxes and expenses as a result of winning this prize are the responsibility of the winner.

By participating in the Contest, a participant agrees to be bound by these Official Rules, and by all decisions of the Contest sponsor.
